Dealing with change is hard! Okay, good change is, well, good. But this past year we’ve all found out just how limited our control is over circumstances, relationships and life. I remember first seeing people walking around wearing a mask and thinking how strange that looked. Now it looks strange if I see someone in a store or restaurant without a mask!

A primary reason change is hard is because the brain doesn’t like change, it likes certainty. And it interprets big change as a threat, which is why most of us, myself included, tend to like to stay in our comfort zone. We like predictability. But 2020 didn’t give us predictable and only God really knows what will happen 2021.

I read recently that it isn’t the smartest or most talented who survive and overcome difficult situations but those who can positively adapt to change. One facet of Life IQ Living© is to navigate change skillfully. You can learn more about Life IQ Living here.

Here are a few ideas that help to lessen anxiety over change and navigate it better:

  • Reduce the emotion of fear by getting more information.
  • Focus on what is possible and move toward that.
  • Grieve any loss if it is warranted.
  • Examine your “new normal” to ensure it includes developing physical, mental, spiritual and relational health. Resisting change leads to stagnation and none of us want that.

Having a “routine” uses less energy and is important but when change is forced upon us we must learn to adapt and embrace it. So how would you rate yourself in adapting to change? What can you do to make it just a little better?

Navigating change is better in community! Come and join the complimentary Life IQ Living Community meetings each month. These will support your intentions to live above circumstances. The meetings are always on the last Tuesday of each month via Zoom. The next is on February 23 at 12noon ET. Register here to join the monthly meeting.
