Happy New Year! This is the time when many think about new goals for the upcoming year. As you do this, you probably already know that to make a big change, or reach a big goal, you want to make it doable. This is done by breaking things down into doable steps to reach the overall desired outcome. But something you probably aren’t practicing is positive self-affirmation. This has been a game changer for me.

Since we are wired to either avoid pain or seek pleasure, you want to ensure some type of “payoff” occurs each time you move towards your goal or act on your intentions. A simple way to do this is through an affirmation to yourself like, “Michael, nice job getting up at 5:30 to have that time for spiritual growth and reflection. Nice job getting to the gym today. Way to push yourself doing the extra reps on the bench press. Nice job saying no to that doughnut to eat healthy today.” I do this because, in order to have overall health, I want to affirm my successes, not just look at where I fall short.

Now it’s your turn. How will you add self-affirmation as a daily reflection? Most of us hear the negative self-talk or negative feedback from others, so take charge of your thoughts and practice positive self-affirmation.
